About Harishchandrachi Factory:
The Backdrop:
Year 1911. British rule. Leader of the Indian Freedom struggle Lokmanya Tilak was in Mandalay prison. Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar were yet to rise on the socio-political horizon. Things were either stagnant or in an infant stage. Motion pictures were in an even earlier phase. Once in a while, in Mumbai, pictures were screened in a tent. They found patronage only among English, Europeans, Americans and elite Indians. Nobody else knew this medium existed. And then one day, a common man, Dhundiraj Phalke, came across a tent theatre accidentally…
Synopsis:
Phalke had abandoned a well established printing business after a quarrel with his partner. He did not ask for any compensation; on the contrary, he gave his word to the worried partner that he would never enter into printing again and would never compete with him! As a result, Phalke was unemployed and struggling to survive. One day he accidentally came across a tent theatre that was screening silent motion pictures. The idea struck him. With a hardworking wife and two enthusiastic kids by his side, he ventured into a
field unknown to contemporary India. The making of India’s first feature film, ‘Raja HarishChandra’, was an amazing adventure. Funny, crazy and grave situations- Phalke family overcame everything. With the help of their cast and crew, not only did they deliver the first Indian film, but also made sure that it became the first super hit film! In 1914, Phalke refused offers from his English friends to make films in London. He said, “I must keep making films in India so that it gets established as an industry at home”. The rest is history.

Necabians had a great time yesterday at the KEA Annual meet. We started off with the pookkalam competition under the leadership of Sandhya chechi(w/o Sudeeshettan) armed with a photo of a pookkalam downloaded from “Google Images”
. Since we knew that the mighty REC pookkalam team is not participating this time, we had some hopes getting a prize . But when we reached their and saw the setup of other pookkalam teams from Model Engg college, CET and MACE , ശരിക്കും പരിഭ്രമിച്ചു . We were amateurs and the others looked so professional!!.
We were declared the runners up in the competition and lost the GUP by just one point..
Congrats to the pookkalam team for making Necab proud again after the BBC win!! It was the sheer spirit and commitment which made us a bunch of amateurs to win the 2nd prize !!
