The simple plastic carry bag used for shopping is a typical example of the dilemma a person, and hence the society, faces when one thinks about sustainable development. Today, it is difficult for the unrban and semiurban societies to imagine life without this simple device which has invaded our psyche as an unavoidable part of our living. Undoubtedly, ' convenience' is what has made it so universally acceptable. That its use does not bring any harmful effects immediately to our individual lives, make it that much more difficult to give up. Those with best of intentions try to reduce its consumption through recycling etc. We make sufficient noises and vow to REDUCE its usage when we see the footages/stills of animals dying after swallowing the bags. For a moment, let us not even get into the harmful effects of plastic when used to carry food , partculalry, hot food. To me, if we have a way of solving this apparently simple, but extremely complex daily issue, we have arrived at the heart of the sustainable development problem. If we go back to 30 or 40 years ago and reconstruct our shooping habits, we may find some clues. Looking forward to hearing Jayraj on the 5th . Unni NITC (70 Elcl).
